the Creator
The Life Of Mann is a collaborative project initiated by Josef Lee, a designer / animator / illustrator from Singapore. Through this project, he hopes to collaborate with creatives from around the world and in the process, see how a single idea can evolve when passed through various hands.
the Concept
The Life Of Mann is a global collaboration in creative storytelling. The story revolves around the main character, Mann, yet every 5 pages will be attempted by a different artist / writer to continue the story.
This is an exciting project where the creativity and ideas of different creatives from across the globe come together. No one knows how the story will end. Each must continue from where the other has left off.
Rules of the Game
1. 5 pages (210mm x 297mm) per invited artist / writer.
2. Continue the story in whatever way and style.
3. Story can be in a totally different direction but has to CONTINUE.
4. Characters can be included / excluded, but story must always revolve around Mann.

Q: Who are you and what was the reason for starting this project?
A: I am Josef Lee a designer / animator / illustrator from Singapore. Through this project, I hope to collaborate with creatives from around the world and in the process, see how a single idea can evolve when passed through various hands.
Q: What was the inspiration behind the concept of The Life Of Mann?
A: As a designer, I have taken part in numerous creative pitches and design competitions. And every time, it never ceased to amaze me how a single common brief can result in varied approaches. It is an invaluable lesson in creativity to see the many different directions that were taken, even though everyone started from the same spot. So this is my brief to the world. Tell a story, of one Mann, in your own personal style.
Q: Why the name 'Mann'?
A: The idea behind The Life Of Mann was to create a very normal and generic character and see how his 'life' transforms when put into the hands of various creators. Mann has no control over his surroundings and the things that are happening to him. Just like all of us. In short, Mann is named after 'Man'.
Q: Who are the invited artists/writers?
A: This project was started as an experiment in creative storytelling. I believe everyone has their individual stories to tell and the perspective of a non-writer will bring a different edge to how stories are usually told. That is why guest artists/writers are not limited to the typical comic artist/writer, but rather anyone who is creative (designers, illustrators, directors etc). The Life Of Mann is also a collaboration with the world, so plans have been made to link up with creatives from different parts of the world.
Q: Can anyone volunteer to draw/write?
A: Volunteers are definitely welcome and much appreciated. Do email me at josef@lifeofmann.com
Q: Are there any restrictions for the artists/writers?
A: Creatives are free to explore any direction or style in continuing the story. The key word here is CONTINUE. Basically, you can do anything with your 5 pages so long as it continues the story in a logical way. And whatever happens, the story has to revolve around Mann.
Q: Any future plans in store?
A: The Life Of Mann is primarily an online graphic novel, so as to facilitate interaction between artists/writers and the readers. However plans are currently underway for the printed version. Check out the latest development here.

about

The Life Of Mann is a global collaboration in creative storytelling. Every 5 pages of the story will be attempted by a different artist/writer. There are no restrictions to the style of drawing, direction of story, or way of presentation. However, the story must CONTINUE. Characters can be included or excluded along the way, but the story must always revolve around the central character - Mann.
